Tissington Dining Chairs [x2]

I was once a locker room bench in a 1950s East London boxing club - elm and ash, heavy-grained and hammered by grit and sweat. My back still shows hints of the painted stripes from those training walls. Now I’m a dining chair - industrial in form, but full of soul.

Each piece is shaped by Florentin and his team in his Cumbria workshop - using traditional joinery, hand tools, and intuitive craftsmanship - no templates, no shortcuts.

It’s slow, expressive work that transforms reclaimed timber into functional, one-off works of art.

The Tissington Chair

Reclaimed | Handmade | One-of-a-Kind

"I used to line the changing rooms of a 1950s boxing club in East London - thick elm for the bench seat, ash backrests bolted to bare brick walls, and steel pegs overhead for gloves and coats. Years of wear, boot scuffs and chalk dust left their mark. Now I’ve been cut down, reshaped and reimagined - ready to hold my ground in quieter rooms."

Each Tissington Chair is handmade from reclaimed British elm and ash - both woods commonly used in mid-century utility furniture and sports fittings. Known for their durability and workhorse grain, they carry the no-nonsense practicality of the era they came from.

Our craftsman Florentin builds every piece by hand in Cumbria (with the help of his team). Legs are lathe-turned, then powder-coated black to echo the industrial fittings of the original benches. The seats and backs are hand-shaped, sanded, and finished in oil and wax to reveal each wood’s natural character.

In some chairs, you’ll notice signs of their former life: paint remnants, scuffs, or oxidised tones from decades of indoor use. These aren’t flaws - they’re artefacts of a story too good to sand away.

Only 110 Tissington Chairs have been made.

This is furniture that remembers where it came from - made to be used, and made to endure.

Please note: No two chairs are alike. Variations in grain, colour and finish are intentional, and part of what makes each Tissington Chair unique.

Care instructions

Our reclaimed wood pieces are made to last - and they don’t ask for much in return.

  • Wipe with a soft, dry cloth regularly to remove dust.

  • Avoid harsh cleaners or polishes - a damp cloth with mild soap is all you’ll ever need for deeper cleans.

  • Keep out of direct sunlight and away from strong heat sources to protect the natural finish and avoid warping.

  • A touch of natural wax once or twice a year will help nourish the wood and enhance its character.

These chairs have already lived long, eventful lives. A little care will ensure they continue to for decades to come.

FAQ

Hands, Not Machines

Florentin works the old way - by eye, by feel. No two joins are ever quite the same, and that’s exactly the point.

Time Etched

You can still feel it in the grain - years of use, weather, and work. We don’t sand out the story. We leave it in.

Purpose

Once a locker room bench, thankfully resistant to sweat - it seems my destiny is to be sat on.
